Boao among the Top Ten Cultural Towns in Hainan Island

9 June 2019

Boao is one of the famous “Top Ten Cultural Towns” in Hainan. It has beautiful natural scenery and profound human settlements. It contains rivers, lakes, seas, mountains and islands. It also has coconut trees, beaches, strange stones, hot springs and gardens. The essence of resources is the one that has the “natural seascape in the world to maintain the most perfect seaport” and the “Jade Belt Beach” natural wonders that enjoys the Guinness Book of the World. Because the famous "Asia Forum" has been permanently settled here, it has become the "heart of Asia" of the Fengyun Conference. It is also the famous "land of overseas Chinese" and a beautiful "paradise town".

Because of the prestigious event, Bo’ao is impeccably maintained every day of the year. Blooming planters and clean-swept streets can be enjoyed by visitors on any day. Additionally, the small town has a diverse selection of ethnic restaurants as well as one of the most well known seafood eateries on the entire island. Peaceful and quiet, Bo’ao combined international savvy with small town appeal. Dotted with ancient temples and surrounded by lush rice fields, Bo’ao is the perfect beach getaway for those who want to avoid the crowds and high prices.

Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boat racing is the most popular activity during the Dragon Boat Festival. This folk custom has been held for more than 2,000 years throughout southern China, and now it has become an international sport.

A dragon boat is a human-powered wooden watercraft. It is shaped and decorated in the form of a Chinese dragon. Dragon boats vary in size by region, and the crew numbers change accordingly. Generally it is about 20–35 meters in length, and it needs 30–60 people to paddle it. During the race each team has a drummer in the head of the dragon boat; the drummer is the heartbeat of the team. Dragon boat teams paddle harmoniously at a pace which is set by the drummer, and do their best synchronized efforts.

Origins of Dragon Boat Racing

Honoring Qu Yuan

Qu Yuan (343–278 BC) was a Chu State official in the Warring States Period. He was the earliest famous poet in China.

When the Chu capital fell the patriotic poet drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people were said to have paddled out on boats, either to scare the fish away or to retrieve his body. The dragon boat races represent the attempts to rescue and recover the body of Qu Yuan. This is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing.\

An Popular Sport Event Today

Now dragon boat racing is an international event. This sport is popular in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Some dragon boat races aren't held around the Dragon Boat Festival. Some are in July, August, or September.

Dragon Boat Festival Food

It is a tradition for the Chinese to eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is made differently in different areas of China.

Historical records show that people used wild rice leaves to wrap millet flour dumplings into the shape of ox horns, and then placed them in bamboo to cook.

During every Dragon Boat Festival many Chinese families follow the custom of eating zongzi. People in the north enjoy zongzi with dates, while people in the south prefer mixed ingredients, such as meat, sausages, and eggs.

This custom is not only very popular in China; it is also practiced in Korea, Japan, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Boao International Forum (BFA)

Like Switzerland's Davos, which is the seat of the latter, Boao is the permanent home of the Forum for Asia.

BFA has become an important platform for Hainan to participate in the construction of the Belt and Road.

BFA has also pushed forward cooperation between Hainan and B&R countries, with an array of projects carried out in recent years.

For example, projects on sharing the seed production technology of a rice breed have been carried out between Hainan and several ASEAN countries. With the technology promoted at previous ASEAN-China Governors/Mayors' Dialogue, nearly 100 experts now come to Hainan to learn about the breed and related technology each year.

So far, 550,000 hectares of hybrid rice has been planted in the Philippines, 2.5 million hectares in India, 330,000 hectares in Pakistan, 700,000 hectares in Vietnam and 200,000 hectares in Indonesia.

Hainan has played an important role in the cooperation on seed production among ASEAN countries.

BFA can better serve the Belt and Road Initiative and panel discussions held on the Hainan free trade zone and the reform, institutional innovation, investment and trade facilitation, business environment, and ecological development of the free trade port. Boao is a laid-back destination with some excellent golfing, water sports, a smattering of culture and local colour - along with some of the best hotels in southern China.

Boao Buddhist temple

The Boao Chan Temple has some impressive Buddhist statues, including a Buddha image donated by the King of Nepal during Boao Forum for Asia, when the temple opened. We stopped by a Buddhist temple which was made into a tourist attraction. Basically like all other tourist attractions, i was amazed by the volume of tourists in what I thought was a quiet town. The temple itself has a guided tour in Mandarin to give an overview of the temple, its architecture and about Buddhism.

The temple itself has nice architecture especially the pagoda that overlooks the temple and the Guanyin statue at the back of the temple that overlooks the river. Prayer jossticks and ribbons can be purchased for offerings.
